Fellows who satisfactorily complete all requirements will walk out of this program as a diploma-carrying graduate of an SAEM-approved fellowship in education scholarship with a substantial portfolio. However, there are a number of things that make our program particularly stand out:
- Our rotation-based curriculum
- Each month of the fellowship comprises one of various ‘rotations’ during which the fellow will more intensely focus their learning and work on a particular focus. These are in addition to longitudinal components throughout the year such as clinical work, master’s courses, and national conferences or other specialized training experiences.
- Customizable to your area of interest and desired academic trajectory
- We offer tracks that allow for specific niche development in areas of graduate medical education (GME), undergraduate medical education (UME), simulation and interprofessional education, and educational innovation through design thinking (TBD). See below for examples of block schedules and activities as they relate to tracks in GME, UME, and Sim/IPE. Please note that blocks and activities below are provided only for applicants to have an idea of a general format, and are subject to change based on availability.
- Deliberate emphasis on innovation and digital competency as it relates to education
- We believe in the idea that every learner at every level should be taught and empowered to be a creative force in their practice, able ask ‘why not?’ and move innovation as opposed to simply functioning as a ‘cog in the wheel’. This requires a real understanding of learner needs, the ability to brainstorm collaboratively and disruptively, prototyping early to inform future development, and focused evaluation of one’s work—all key elements of the design process (empathize-define-ideate-prototype-test) and Kern model of curricular development
- From the Master’s curricula to e-learning to visualization and high-fidelity simulation, you will become savvy in the responsible use, application, development, and distribution of a wide variety of engaging educational content
- Unprecedented access to expertise and technology across specialties and disciplines
- While you will be ‘housed’ within emergency medicine, you will benefit from teaching alongside healthcare providers and educators of a variety of specialties, expert technicians in simulation, visualization, and e-learning, education researchers, and undergraduate faculty and learners.
