Leadership in Medical Education

Dr. Neil A. Hamill is an associate professor in the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was recently appointed section chief for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division. In this leadership role, Dr. Hamill oversees the clinical, educational, and research activities of the section, guiding the next generation of Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists and advancing the mission of high-quality, evidence-based care for high-risk pregnancies. Dr. Hamill is also a member of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit Team, reflecting a commitment to institutional preparedness and public health.

Dr. Hamill is deeply committed to medical education, providing annual didactic lectures and simulation training for OB-GYN residents and medical students. His teaching portfolio includes core topics such as abnormal fetal growth, diabetes in pregnancy, hypertension, thyroid disease, and abnormal fetal heart rate tracing. He has led annual simulation workshops on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and obstetric laceration repair and has been the annual MFM review leader for the CREOG examination for UNMC OB-GYN residents since 2010.

More recently in 2026, Dr. Hamill created a program to address gaps in residency ultrasound education. The Program for Ultrasound Learning in Sonographic Education, or PULSE program, utilizes dedicated one-on-one hands-on ultrasound training combined with didactic lectures to improve resident ultrasound learning.

Dr. Hamill’s excellence in teaching has been recognized with the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award (2025) and the CREOG Outstanding Faculty Award (2012).

Dr. Hamill’s research focuses on Maternal-Fetal Medicine, prenatal diagnosis, and the application of advanced imaging and artificial intelligence in obstetrics. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, with notable contributions to the understanding of fetal cardiac function, placental vascular resistance, and prenatal screening for congenital heart disease. His recent work includes a 2025 publication on AI-driven frameworks for improving prenatal screening in rural Nebraska and participation in clinical trials such as a phase 3 study of a multivalent group B Streptococcus vaccine in pregnancy. Dr. Hamill’s research has been recognized with awards for best abstracts and presentations at national and international conferences. 

Dr. Hamill’s dedication to clinical care, education, and research has been recognized with numerous honors throughout his career. These include the Leroy A. Calkins Award for outstanding graduating medical student in OB-GYN, the Burlex Best Teaching Resident Award, multiple research presentation awards during fellowship, the CREOG Outstanding Faculty Award, and the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award. His work has also been acknowledged with a best abstract award from the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. 

Dr. Hamill is an active mentor to residents, fellows, and medical students, fostering their development through direct supervision, research collaboration, and educational leadership. He has served as a reviewer for leading journals such as the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Hamill is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is also engaged in community education, delivering talks and creating resources for patients and the public on topics such as gestational diabetes, heart-healthy pregnancy, and prenatal anatomy exams.
