Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a second year pediatric cardiology fellow originally from a small farm town in east Iowa. I did my undergraduate education at a division III college in northeast Iowa at Wartburg College where I majored in biology and participated in cross country and track all four years. I then moved to Des Moines, Iowa and completed my Master’s degree in Anatomy at Des Moines University followed by medical school training at the same institution. Finally, I completed pediatric residency at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Why did you decide to pursue pediatric cardiology?
I discovered my fascination with cardiac anatomy and physiology throughout my master’s program and first years of medical training. I enjoyed learning the intricate complexities of the cardiac structure and how the heart developed throughout fetal life. It wasn’t until second year of medical school when I was introduced to the variety and complexity of congenital heart disease. This sparked my interest even more. Pairing that with my love for providing care for children and young families I knew this was the perfect field for me.
Is there a specific area of cardiology that you are interested in?
I am currently interested in cardiac electrophysiology and general cardiology.
Why did you choose to train at Children's Nebraska?
I did an elective away rotation during residency at Children’s Nebraska specifically to gain a greater exposure to a higher volume cardiac center. During that month I absolutely fell in love with the culture of the program as well as the medicine they practiced. I was able to experience the broad field of pediatric cardiology and get hands on experience in cardiac cath lab, EP lab, and with multiple types of cardiac diagnostic modalities. This program demonstrated that I would get the clinical exposure I would need to become a strong pediatric cardiologist and would also provide the incredible faculty support to achieve all my career goals.
What are your hobbies and what do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my wife and 2 kids (3.5 and 2 years old)! We love to get outside and go to many of the attractions and parks that are around Omaha. Otherwise, I enjoy getting out and running and biking the multiple trail systems that Omaha provides.
What is your favorite part of living in Omaha?
I love that you truly get all that you could want in a big city in a very easy to navigate smaller place. The food scene is very diverse and there are so many things to do on a weekly basis with regards to shows, concerts, going to the zoo, or just finding something new and fun downtown.
What would you say to someone interested in pursuing training at Children's Nebraska?
I wish everyone who is interested in pediatric cardiology would take a solid look at Children’s Nebraska. The culture and volume of this program is top tier and second to none. I am confident that I am being trained and am on track to be a competent general cardiologist and also being set up well to pursue sub-specialty training.
