Extended Path PharmD cover

A New Path to a PharmD

Life doesn't always fit a traditional academic schedule. Whether you're working full-time, supporting a family, or balancing other responsibilities, the Extended PharmD pathway provides a flexible route to becoming a pharmacist without compromising educational quality. Students earn the same PharmD degree while progressing through the curriculum at a pace designed to support today's learners.

The UNMC College of Pharmacy is the only college of pharmacy in Nebraska to offer an extended PharmD pathway and just the second public university in the nation to enroll students in an extended PharmD program. This innovative approach expands access to pharmacy education while helping meet the growing need for pharmacists across Nebraska and beyond.

Program Highlights

Flexible by Design

The Extended PharmD pathway allows students to complete the same PharmD curriculum over six years instead of four, creating greater flexibility for those balancing work, family, military service, or other commitments. Students progress at a pace designed to fit real-life responsibilities while working toward the same professional degree.

Same Degree, Same Outcomes

Students in the Extended Pathway complete the same accredited curriculum, experiential education requirements, assessments, and learning outcomes as students in the traditional PharmD program. Upon graduation, students earn the same Doctor of Pharmacy degree and are equally prepared for licensure and pharmacy practice.

A First-of-Its-Kind Opportunity

Beginning in 2027, UNMC will become the first college of pharmacy in Nebraska, and just the second public university in the country to enroll students in an extended PharmD program, expanding access to pharmacy education for a broader range of learners

Who Should Consider the Extended Pathway?

The Extended PharmD Pathway was created for students who have the talent and determination to become pharmacists but need a program structure that better fits their lives. If balancing work, family, military service, caregiving responsibilities, or other commitments makes a traditional four-year program challenging, this pathway may be the right fit for you.

This program is ideal for:

  • Working pharmacy technicians
  • Career changers
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Students balancing employment and education
  • Individuals seeking greater flexibility while pursuing a PharmD
