Visiting Learners & Job Shadowing
Explore what a career in anesthesiology looks like by shadowing one of our clinical professionals.
Our job shadowing experience gives students and aspiring health professionals the chance to observe daily work, ask questions, and deepen their understanding of patient care in anesthesiology, all in a real clinical setting.
Our anesthesiology team will help you observe clinical workflows, learn about roles within perioperative care and gain insight into the skills and decision-making necessary for safe anesthesia practice.
Graduate Medical Education (GME)
House Officers (residents and fellows)
Residents and fellows in GME-accredited programs within the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology. These individuals are directed by the core residency program director and fellowship program directors.
Trainees from other institutions’ GME programs who have formally requested an opportunity to rotate as house officers in the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology. These individuals are treated similarly to off-service residents described above and may contact the off-service rotation coordinator for their clinical experience.
Undergraduate Medical Education (UME)
UME learners include medical students at various stages of training. M4 students are considered on-rotation with direct patient interaction expectations.
Fourth-year medical students apply for opportunities to rotate via OASIS during elective selection. Available rotations:
- Anesthesiology (720)
- Critical Care Anesthesiology (725)
- Chronic Pain (734)
- Research - Anesthesiology (798)
- Advanced Anesthesiology (799)
These individuals apply online via the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) portal. Once processed, they are selected by the Medical Student Rotation Coordinator(s). Available rotations:
- Anesthesiology (720)
- Critical Care Anesthesiology (725)
These students may request a single-day observership in the department, more than once. Students interested in anesthesiology can contact the department directly to be assigned to the OR3 resident on their selected day.
Non-UME Learners
These individuals are not enrolled in formal medical education programs. They include observers (formal arrangements, typically 2–4 weeks) and shadows (less formal, typically single-day experiences).
Often physicians from other countries or training programs requesting longer-term (2–4 week) observerships. Observers do not have direct patient contact and must remain with their assigned attending or delegate at all times.
- UNMC Non-COM Foreign Medical Graduate Physician Employees: These individuals will be assigned department member(s) to pair with and observe for the defined period.
- Non-UNMC Foreign Medical Graduate Physicians: Require formal agreement and UNMC approval. All requisite forms and training must be completed before beginning.
Students from UNMC programs outside the College of Medicine can enter clinical areas with their UNMC credentials after completing required documentation. They do not require OHPE authorization. Access is offered during times faculty have volunteered to take shadows.
Individuals interested in shadowing an anesthesiologist must apply through OHPE using the links below. All required documents and authorizations must be completed prior to the shadowing experience. Available times are those volunteered by interested faculty.
