Annual MD-PhD Scholars Retreat

Workshops and Mentorship

The 2022 retreat featured a number of workshops and peer-mentoring opportunities.

  • Professional development activity: "In so many words" focusing on the importance of succinct dissemination of information
  • Mentoring sessions on transitions (such as medical school to graduate school and graduate school to medical school)
  • Each cohort had the opportunity to mentor the cohort a year behind them and to be mentored by the cohort a year ahead of them
  • A panel with alumni of the UNMC MD/PhD program

Scientific Lectures and Presentations

The 2022 retreat had a variety of presentations and lectures from UNMC and visiting faculty.

  • Poster session, led by current students in the Graduate Phase of training
  • Oral presentations by each of our M3 scholars (recent PhD graduates) on their dissertation research
  • "Year-in-Review" by UNMC MD/PhD director, Dr. Justin Mott
  • Keynote speaker, Dr. Ruth Gotian, Ed.D serves as Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine

Social Activities

  • Icebreakers using fun facts about students in the program
  • Optional wine tasting, yard games, and fire pit
  • Game night and stargazing to finish off the night

Keynote Speakers

Keynote speakers at past retreats have included:

  • 2022: Ruth Gotian, EdD - Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine
  • 2021: Lydia Kang, MD - Assistant Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, and author of young adult fiction, adult fiction, and non-fiction, and poetry.
  • 2020: Donald W. (Will) Parsons, MD, PhD - Deputy Director, Texas Children's Cancer and Hematoogy Centers, Texas Children's Hospital; Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Section of Hematology-Oncology, Baylor College of Medicine
