John D. Shepherd, MD

John D. Shepherd, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UNMC. As a board-certified ophthalmologist and low vision specialist, he also provides patient care through UNMC's primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, at the Truhlsen Eye Institute.

His research is focused on developing the use of telecommunications technology to provide low vision services. 

He enjoys teaching student doctors and ophthalmologists the art and principles of low vision care. He speaks nationally to ophthalmologists and other low vision care providers on low vision rehabilitation topics to increase awareness of the importance of low vision care.

Research Interests
Developing the ability to provide low vision services by means of telecommunications technology as a means of combatting the challenges of the extreme shortage of low vision specialists and the growing population of visually impaired individuals living in rural areas with limited access to low vision services.
