Dr. Bares joined the HIV/Infectious Diseases team in 2013. She earned her undergraduate degree from Amherst College and her M.D. from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, followed by Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Chicago, where she also served as chief resident.
Her clinical work focuses on improving the health of people with HIV, with a special interest in multidisciplinary care and Spanish-speaking populations — she co-founded a Spanish-language HIV clinic that operates twice monthly.
Dr. Bares's research, informed by her clinical practice, spans HIV comorbidities, aging, and women’s health, and includes both federally funded and industry-sponsored studies.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Bares has received multiple teaching awards, including the Golden Apple for best pre-clinical educator. She is passionate about mentoring trainees and actively contributes to medical education at all levels.
Deeply committed to community service, she mentors at the RESPECT clinic, serves on the Board of Directors for OneWorld Health Center, and co-founded the Nebraska chapter of the National Hispanic Medical Association.
