Austin Wheeler, MD
Assistant Professor, Division of Rheumatology
Dr. Austin Wheeler is a rheumatologist and clinician-investigator with a research interest in bioinformatics and the application of multi-omic techniques to study rheumatic disease, mainly rheumatoid arthritis and gout. His long-term goal is to elucidate disease mechanisms and biomarkers to develop tools that can help identify individuals at higher risk of certain diseases or complications and guide individualized treatment selection. He has received research funding from the Rheumatology Research Foundation and is currently pursuing an MS in Clinical and Translational Research through the Mentored Scholars Program at UNMC.
Clinically, Dr. Wheeler treats patients with all rheumatic diseases, with a particular focus on inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. He performs procedures such as joint injections and often utilizes musculoskeletal ultrasound in this aspect. He is involved in the training of medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Wheeler is involved in several national committees through the American College of Rheumatology and Rheumatology Research Foundation. In his free time, he enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, reading, baking, and playing board games.
