Dr. Sarosh Rana is Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she also holds the Chris J. and Marie A. Olson Endowed Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She joined UNMC in 2025 after holding major academic leadership roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston from 2009–2014 and at the University of Chicago from 2014-2025, including serving as Section Chief of Maternal–Fetal Medicine, Director of the Ultrasound Unit, Program Director of the Translational Research Fellowship, and Chief Obstetrical Transformation Officer.  

At UNMC, Dr. Rana leads departmental strategy for medical education, clinical service, and faculty development, and serves as President of the Olson Center for Women’s Health Advisory Committee. She is the founder of EMBRACE Nebraska, an emerging program dedicated to improving maternal health outcomes across the region.

The Systemic Treatment and Management of Postpartum Hypertension program, led by Dr. Sarosh Rana, is designed to help new mothers manage high blood pressure after pregnancy. High blood pressure, including conditions like preeclampsia, can develop during pregnancy or in the weeks following childbirth and may lead to serious health risks if not closely monitored.

Dr. Rana has a long record of excellence in medical education across all training levels. She has delivered recurring CREOG board‑review lectures, case‑based learning sessions for medical students, and advanced didactics on hypertension in pregnancy, placentation, and maternal–fetal physiology at Harvard, the University of Chicago, and now UNMC. 

She has extensive experience supervising trainees in clinical settings including labor and delivery, high‑risk obstetrics clinics, and ultrasound units. Since joining UNMC, she has continued hands‑on teaching for learners in outpatient care, high‑risk obstetric evaluation, and ultrasound. She also leads educational initiatives through monthly departmental sessions (Empower Hour) and contributes to system‑wide teaching on hypertension in pregnancy.  

Her prior leadership in training programs includes founding the OB‑GYN Translational Research Fellowship, a GME‑approved program providing residents 70% protected research time — with graduates consistently matching into competitive MFM fellowships. 

Dr. Rana’s accomplishments have been recognized with numerous national honors, including: 

  • American Hospital Association Citation of Merit 
  • Multiple mentorship and teaching awards, including the John D. Arnold, MD Mentor Award 

Her recognitions reflect national leadership in maternal health equity, innovation in hypertension‑in‑pregnancy care, and outstanding contributions to academic medicine. 

Dr. Rana is a highly sought‑after mentor, having advised over 100 trainees including undergraduates, medical students, OB‑GYN residents, maternal-fetal medicine fellows, and junior faculty. Her mentees have earned national research awards, secured NIH funding, and matched into leading academic programs. At UNMC, she mentors faculty, residents and students.  

Dr. Rana's professional engagement spans key national and international roles directly relevant to education and clinical standards, including: 

  • Co-Chair, Global Health Committee, ISSHP (2018-2025) 
  • Rural Primary Care Deserts Task Force (2025–present)
     

Her global work — including creation of the Preeclampsia Education of the Nation curriculum in India and participation in the Virtual Learning Series on Preeclampsia — reflects a deep commitment to improving maternal health education worldwide.

Dr. Rana is an internationally recognized expert in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preeclampsia biomarkers, and maternal cardiovascular health. She has authored over 138 peer-reviewed publications; her research being cited more than 15,000 times, and a H-index of 53 demonstrates sustained impact in her field.  

Her work was instrumental in the FDA approval (June 2023) of the sFlt‑1/PlGF biomarker test for early identification of severe preeclampsia, where she served as a major contributing author and enrolled the largest U.S. cohort. These biomarkers were subsequently incorporated into ACOG Clinical Guidelines in 2024.

Dr. Rana currently leads or contributes to several major research initiatives, including: 

  • Gates Foundation project on developing preeclampsia therapeutic (PI) (2025-2027) 
  • ARPA‑H site‑PI for validation of a whole‑blood sFlt‑1 assay (2025–2027)  
  • NIH R01 on aspirin and cardiac dysfunction in preeclampsia (Co‑I) (2021-2026) 

Her translational work bridges biomarker science, global maternal health, and health‑equity–focused innovation.
