Training the next generation of mental health leaders

The UNMC Department of Psychiatry provides undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education to students in medicine and allied health, residents, fellows, practicing physicians and other mental health practitioners. We provide them with a solid foundation in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all major psychiatric disorders and related medical and neurological disorders. Our faculty is committed to training the next generation of leaders in the field of mental health. We strive to equip individuals with the skills for lifelong learning and a framework for translating the latest research into patient care. We also share our expertise with the larger biomedical community through Continuing Medical Education accredited Psychiatry Grand Rounds for physicians and mental health professionals and through active participation in national and international organizations.

Through direct patient care, interactive seminars and simulated cases, students are exposed to the mental health needs of children and adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Residents and fellows are trained through the combined resources of the Creighton University Medical Center and University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Departments of Psychiatry. Through diverse clinical experiences, a comprehensive didactic curriculum and the guidance of an enthusiastic faculty, residents are afforded the opportunity to design a flexible post-graduate experience to fit their career goals. We’re also excited to make mental health educational resources increasingly available to all health care providers and Nebraskans through our collaboration with the Behavior Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN).
