Residency

The UNMC Department of Psychiatry residency program offers broad clinical training and a strong commitment to professional development.

Residents have the advantage of our academic medical center in Omaha and varied training sites, including rural and forensic settings. Our clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, is a well-established regional academic health network with 809 licensed beds at its two hospitals, more than 1,400 physicians, and 40 specialty and primary care clinics in Omaha and surrounding areas.

The residency leadership and the Department of Psychiatry are based on the main medical campus in Poynter Hall. This extensively renovated building, which opened in 1913, is the first structure of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. The department faculty includes over 40 members, most of whom are clinician-educators with subspecialty expertise.

In addition to the residency program, we have accredited fellowships in addiction medicine, forensic psychiatry, and post-doctoral psychology programs. Additional psychiatry-eligible fellowships at UNMC include Brain Injury Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Pain Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry.

Our medium-sized program has approximately 4-6 residents in each class, allowing for more personalized mentoring and attention. Faculty, staff, and trainees enjoy a high quality of life and a low cost of living—approximately 10% below the national average—in Omaha, a vibrant Midwest city with a population of 487,000. The Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area has over 1 million people, and the city's demographic is comparable to that of the general United States, with a historically lower unemployment rate.

Prospective residents can learn more about us through this website and our social media accounts on X/Twitter and Instagram (@UNMCPsychiatry or #UNMCPsychRes). Omaha and the department have much to offer our future trainees.
