Ruirui Liu, PhD

As an assistant professor and medical physicist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center since November 2023, Ruirui Liu, PhD, provides clinical support and leads research in computational radiation biology, proton FLASH therapy, computational dosimetry, and AI applications. Prior to this, he completed his medical physics residency at Emory University (2020–2023), where he published extensively on machine learning in radiotherapy, proton FLASH, and radiobiology simulations including red journal, polarization mode dispersion and medical physics. Dr. Liu also has expertise in both high dose rate and low dose rate brachytherapy, gamma knife, stereotactic body radiation therapy and proton therapy.

From 2017–2020, Dr. Liu served as a postdoctoral research associate at Washington University in St. Louis, developing dual energy CT methods for proton therapy and brachytherapy and creating simulation tools for nanoparticle-enhanced radiotherapy and radiation transport. Earlier, he earned his PhD in radiation health physics at Oregon State University (2012–2017), preceded by two years as an assistant research scientist in China (2010–2012), where he cultivated expertise in radiation health across academic and industrial settings, establishing a global perspective.
