Dr. Shaw was recruited to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1985 to lead the establishment of the solid organ transplant program. He served as Chief of Transplantation until 1997 when he became Chairman of the Department of Surgery.

In 2008, after 12 years, Dr. Shaw resigned his Chair position to lead the Advanced Computer Applications Program, an initiative to develop point of care applications to speed physician documentation while creating practice-based data for patient management and medical research. The program was supported by the Nebraska Medical Center hospital, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the University Medical Associates. By the end of 2012, the 15-member team supported more than 500 clinical users on campus. The program was terminated in April of 2013 at which time Dr. Shaw ceased all clinical activity and became involved full time in teaching medical students.
