Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography Fellowship

We train our fellows to develop advanced clinical ultrasound skills and prepare them for clinical ultrasound leadership.

Our faculty have a diverse background including fellowship training in ultrasound, toxicology, sports medicine, emergency medical services, education and critical care. All of these will enhance the education of the ultrasound fellow as ultrasound is integrated into these diverse fields.

Our growing program will provide an invaluable experience that will prepare our fellow to lead locally and regionally in their future career, whether it be in community or academic practice.

Our one-year fellow will develop advanced clinical ultrasound skills, and will have the opportunity to learn the nuances of emergency ultrasound which will prepare them for clinical practice. After the acquisition of advanced skills, the fellow will hone the teaching skills necessary to lead ultrasound within any emergency department, whether community-based or academic. This will be accomplished through active involvement in simulation, medical student education, resident lectures, bedside teaching, continued staff development and interdepartmental relationships.

Throughout the year, the fellow will participate in the development and administration of the ultrasound program, including unique opportunities to innovate in ultrasound education (fresh tissue models, advanced simulation, virtual reality and augmented virtual reality). Through these experiences, our fellow will be prepared to tackle the administrative and educational challenges that exist within any ultrasound program. Additionally, our program benefits from the experiences of both a major academic medical center (with a patient volume of about 60,000) and a community site (with a patient volume of about 35,000). This will allow recent residency graduates to experience both practice environments and determine their ideal future practice.

After completion of the program the fellow will be able to hold or be board eligible for a focused practice designation in advanced emergency medicine ultrasonography by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
