About the Department

With 12 divisions, the Department of Internal Medicine constantly pursues all three aspects of the UNMC mission: clinical service, medical education and biomedical research.

More than 280 physicians and scientists comprise the internal medicine faculty. They are experienced clinicians, accomplished researchers, and talented educators. Our faculty is a metropolitan group of well-trained professionals who all understand the need to work as a team member to accomplish our overriding goal of enhancing the health of all Nebraskans.

About 148 physicians annually train in our renowned residency and fellowship programs. Over the past 15 years, we have a 98 percent board pass rate for the Internal Medicine Board, and for good reason:  The curriculum offers a strong foundation with well-defined objectives, 14 subspecialty electives and a wide array of rotations - here at the medical center and elsewhere in the U.S., as well as in South Africa.

Research is a vital part of department activities, with grants totaling more than $25 million annually. Our researchers are active and well-published - collectively, we publish more than 350 peer-reviewed journal articles a year.
