Omar Abughanimeh, MBBS

Omar Abughanimeh, MBBS, is an assistant professor in the UNMC Division of Medical Oncology. He specializes in the treatment of thoracic malignancies, as well as head and neck cancers, sarcomas and cancers of unknown primary origin.

Dr. Abughanimeh earned his medical degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology and completed his internship at King Hussein Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan. He subsequently completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He then pursued fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at UNMC.

His research focuses on developing novel systemic therapies and advancing clinical trials for patients with solid tumors. As a principal investigator, Dr. Abughanimeh leads investigator-initiated, cooperative group and industry-sponsored studies evaluating innovative therapeutic approaches, including immunotherapies, targeted therapies and other emerging treatments. He has served as an invited author for multi-center clinical trial publications and oncology review articles.

Dr. Abughanimeh has received national recognition for his research, including the American Society of Hematology Abstract Achievement Award, the ASCO Conquer Cancer Merit Award and ASCO-AACR Methods in Clinical Cancer Research. His national service includes membership on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines Panel for Occult Primary Cancers. In addition, he serves as an Academic Editor for Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal.

In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Abughanimeh serves as medical director of the clinics and infusion centers at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Village Pointe Cancer Center. He is also vice chair of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Data Safety Monitoring Committee.

Through his work as a clinician, investigator and leader, Dr. Abughanimeh is dedicated to expanding access to innovative cancer treatments, advancing multidisciplinary cancer care and improving outcomes for patients with solid tumors.
