Research Recognition

Annual Department Research Awards

Nominations are sought in the following categories for the annual Internal Medicine Research Awards:

  1. Career Excellence Research Award: This award is intended to recognize established faculty (professor level) for excellence in their research career. It is expected that the awardee will have a longstanding research career as demonstrated by publications, external funding and national/international recognition in their area of expertise.
  2. Clinical Research Award: This award is intended to recognize junior or mid-level faculty (assistant or associate level) for excellence in a clinical research program. It is expected that the awardee will have publications, external funding, and an emerging reputation in their area of expertise.
  3. Basic Science Research Award: This award is intended to recognize junior or mid-level faculty (assistant or associate level) for excellence in a basic science (bench) program. It is expected that the awardee will have publications, external funding, and an emerging reputation in their area of expertise.
  4. Fellowship Research Award: This award is intended to recognize a fellow who has demonstrated excellence in his/her specific research project. This category includes individuals who are part of a clinical sub-specialty fellowship within the Internal Medicine Department. It is expected that this awardee will have performed work that leads to presentation at a national meeting and/or publication of the work.
  5. Resident Research Award: This award is intended to recognize a resident who has demonstrated excellence in a specific research project. It is expected that this awardee has or will be presenting their work at a regional or national meeting or has submitted their work for publication.
  6. Post-Doctoral Research Award: This award is intended to recognize a post-doc who has demonstrated excellence in a specific research project. It is expected that this awardee has or will be presenting their work at a regional or national meeting or has submitted their work for publication. This awardee must have a PhD, must not be faculty, and must not be a visiting scientist.
  7. Laureate Award for UNMC Department of Medicine Visiting Scientists: This award is intended to recognize a visiting scientist who has demonstrated excellence in a specific research project done at UNMC. It is expected that this awardee has or will be presenting their work at a national meeting or has submitted their work for publication. This awardee may have a MD or PhD degree and must not have a faculty position at UNMC. 
  8. Daughton Award: This award is for a non-faculty employee in the Department of Internal Medicine whose professional activities, such as teaching, publications, or scholarly research, exceed what is normally expected of individuals in the position.   This award recognizes non-faculty members of research teams who demonstrate creativity and leadership and have excelled as noted by presentations made, publications, or key roles on funded research projects.  This award was named in honor of David Daughton who had an exemplary career as a non-faculty researcher in the area of smoking cessation in Internal Medicine at UNMC.
  9. Medical Student Award: This award is for a UNMC medical student who has shown initiative in a research  project and has performed exemplary work resulting in a presentation or publication in work done in conjunction with the Department of Internal Medicine.
  10. Faculty Research Mentoring Award: This award is intended to recognize mid-level or senior faculty (associate or professor level) excellence in providing mentorship in research activities to one or more faculty colleagues. It is expected that the awardee will have evidence of especially robust mentoring relationships as demonstrated by consistent mentoring meetings and the academic output of their mentees, as well as the qualitative report from the mentee(s). It is expected that the mentee will have a developing research career as demonstrated by publications, external funding and emerging recognition in their area of expertise.
  11. Faculty Clinical and Educational Mentoring Award: This award is intended to recognize mid-level or senior faculty (associate or professor level) excellence in providing mentorship in clinical and/or educational activities to one or more faculty colleagues. It is expected that the awardee will have evidence of especially robust mentoring relationships as demonstrated by the frequency of mentoring meetings and the academic output of their mentees, as well as the qualitative report from the mentee(s). Mentoring can support mentees in the promotion & tenure process, clinical care effectiveness, research and teaching accomplishments, as well as assist in work-life balance.
