Critical Care Fellowship

Critical Care Fellowship

Through the partnership between  UNMC and Children’s Nebraska, our Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program delivers a comprehensive training experience with a personalized approach. Fellows gain hands-on experience in a free-standing regional children’s hospital, supported by the depth and breadth of a major academic research institution.

The new, state-of-the-art intensive care units at Children’s Nebraska boast 32 Pediatric intensive care unit beds and 32 Cardiac Care Unit beds with a total of approximately 1,700 ICU admissions per year and 300 cardiac surgeries per year. It’s here that our fellows train with over 20 pediatric critical care faculty to become conscientious and adept intensivists, well-prepared to pursue careers in clinical care, education, quality improvement and research.

During your fellowship, you will manage children requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VAD), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and plasma exchange (PLEX) as well as those undergoing heart, kidney, liver, intestinal and multivisceral transplants. Our critical care transport team delivers the most critically ill children from Nebraska and the surrounding states. And, as a level 1 pediatric trauma center, you will work with premier subspecialists and surgeons with vast expertise and a passion for teaching. The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine group provides remote support to the region’s only dedicated burn trauma unit at CHI Health St. Elizabeth’s Regional Burn and Wound Center, and we offer telemedicine services throughout the region to aid providers in resource poor areas with specialized pediatric guidance on management.

A more specialized pediatric intensive care unit at UNMC/Nebraska Medicine hosts the niche population of children undergoing kidney, liver, intestinal and multivisceral transplants. We are the largest pediatric intestinal transplant center in the country. Our liver transplant program is one of the longest running and most experienced programs in the U.S.
