The mission of the UNMC Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship program is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art training in pediatric nephrology that equips fellows with the knowledge, skills, and professional values needed to become expert clinicians, researchers, and educators.

Program Overview

Our Nephrology Fellowship program offers comprehensive, high-quality training across the full spectrum of kidney disease, providing a unique educational experience in a Midwestern setting.

Fellows train at Children’s Nebraska—a rapidly growing, state-of-the-art, freestanding children’s hospital—and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, a world-class clinical and research institute and home to Nebraska’s only kidney transplant program. Together, these sites offer diverse, immersive clinical experiences that foster scholarly development and clinical growth.

Robust research opportunities are available in clinical and translational science, quality improvement, and educational outcomes. Fellows are supported in pursuing scholarly work with any principal investigator affiliated with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Additional opportunities for multicenter clinical and translational research are available through established collaborative research networks in which our faculty are actively engaged.

Fellows with an interest in medical education benefit from a range of teaching opportunities, working with interprofessional learners from nationally recognized institutions, including Creighton University and the University of Nebraska.

Our three-year program features a flexible curriculum tailored to each fellow’s interests, with opportunities to receive expertise in:

• Neonatal Dialysis: As leaders in neonatal dialysis, our program offers fellows exposure to one of the nation’s foremost centers in neonatal kidney care.
• Critical Care Nephrology: Fellows receive extensive experience in continuous renal replacement therapy, intermittent hemodialysis, and acute peritoneal dialysis.
• Transplantation: The transplant program at University of Nebraska Medical Center offers comprehensive exposure to all aspects of transplant care, including patient evaluation, perioperative and immediate post-transplant management, long-term management, and participation in quality improvement and research initiatives.
• Chronic Dialysis: As the only pediatric dialysis unit in the state, the Children’s Nebraska dialysis program provides fellows with comprehensive exposure to both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
• Research and Medical Education

Fellows have a dedicated panel of patients whom they follow longitudinally throughout their training, fostering continuity of care and deeper clinical engagement.

A thoughtfully designed schedule promotes work-life balance while maintaining rigorous clinical and academic training.
