Vicki Herrera is currently a Research Coordinator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the training and education coordinator for the Biocontainment Unit at Nebraska Medicine. She is an Alternate Responsible Official for the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s select agent program. In addition, Vicki is the Laboratory Workgroup Chair for NETEC.
During the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak, she was one of the laboratorians responsible for the point of care testing for patients who had contracted Ebola virus disease in West Africa. She was also responsible for training and coordinating laboratory staff during unit activation and continues that roll today. She provided both support and education during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the Mpox outbreak. She has traveled, and continues to travel, across the nation to provide laboratory education and expertise on the safe handling of clinical specimens in special pathogen settings.
Vicki has a Master’s of Science degree in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. She has worked in the clinical laboratory for over 20 years, and has a broad background in research and industry as well.
