"Caduceus Arstentum" John Hao

Origami; The Caduceus, a winged staff encoiled by two snakes, is a symbol of healing derived from Greek mythology. It is represented here by a medical stent that was created using principles of origami design that have inspired real advances in biomedical technology. The background depicts the crease pattern known as the "waterbomb" base that folds into the completed stent. The wings and snakes are folded from separate pieces of foil paper. This work ultimately intends to represent both a symbol and real example of the healing reach of origami.

"Saffron Whispers of Home" Sophia Roslyn Jensen

Print, Poetry; On a lazy July summer day, I woke up from a couch-nap to the familiar aroma of mom's tahdig and saffron, stirring nostalgic memories of my childhood home. A dreamer with aspirations, I moved thousands of miles away from my family and home, to pursue my journey of becoming a doctor, embracing new horizons and opportunities. As the aroma of home wafts through the air, I can't help but yearn for the carefree days and the warmth of my mother's kitchen, where love and tradition intertwined. Yet, I learn to find solace in writing and connecting with the diverse patient population, which rekindles my connection to my Persian heritage.

"Control Center" Garrett Sacco

Digital Art; With its intricacies and mysteries, the brain is the great frontier of the science and art of medicine. Inspired by studying the nervous system in preparation for clinical rotations, Garrett created this as a tribute to the brain during M2 year. Garrett is a now a child neurology resident in Dallas.

"Self Portrait Through the Scope" Brittany Soukup

Oil Painting; This painting was inspired by my general surgery rotation. I was scrubbed into a laparoscopic surgery. We were a couple hours into the surgery and I had been staring at the screen connected to the scope. When the scope was taken out, I noticed it was pointed at a person and it took me a while to realize that I had been staring at myself. I thought the perspective was interesting and I knew at that moment I wanted to paint it.

"Timeline of Doctors" Brittany Soukup

Oil Painting; This painting shows doctors from different times starting with Hippocrates at the patient's feet and ending with a modern-day doctor at the patient's head. They are all passing tools from their time to the next generation. Hippocrates is passing a scalpel to the 18th century doctor as bleeding was a common form of treatment at the time (along with the idea of the 4 humours). The 18th century doctor is passing a syringe to the MASH doctor showing the invention of vaccines. The MASH doctor (I chose to pain Hawkeye from the show MASH as the show played a role in my interest of medicine) is passing fistula tubing the 1980s doctor. The 1980s doctor has his hand on the shoulder of the modern doctor to show the mentoring process. I painted this piece during my first year of medical school when I had little actual knowledge of medicine, but a strong desire to learn. I will be graduating in a few months (May 2023) and I plan on entering the field of Ob/Gyn.

"Self Portrait" Tiffany Truong

Acrylic and Mixed Media Collage on Canvas; In Dr. Bud Shaw's Medicine in Literature, Media, and Movies Course, students were challenged to "tell the story of your month of January (2022) and how this court fit into it." For my final project, I chose collage as the primary medium because I've always thought of a person's life experiences as the ultimate collage. This self-portrait highlights my experiences in medical school, depicted through personally annotated pages from my First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 Study Guide. The original idea for this piece comes from several phrases I was told growing up (and even now): "You'd lose your head if it wasn't attached." "You ask too many questions." "You have your head in the clouds." "You're too optimistic." "Your thoughts are all over the place." "You really wear your heart on your sleeve." "You need to stop worrying about everything." Hidden messages aside, I don't think any of those qualities make you a bad physician - just a normal human.
