‘We just wanted to get him home’

After longer than expected hospital stays, now came the work to get tracheostomy patient Tony Trumble home safely to rural Nebraska. Earlier this week, we introduced you to the Trumble family, who shared the emotions they experienced as they came to terms with the sudden need for Tony to have a tracheostomy, and the wonderful care they received at Nebraska Medical Center.

The Futurists - Podcast Episode: Simulating The Human Body

Visualizing the interior of the human body has always presented a major challenge to caregivers. Most medical imaging techniques in use today were first introduced during the past fifty years. Today novel technologies for entertainment are being applied to healthcare. Michael Hollins of the University of Nebraska’s iEXCEL Center joins the Futurists to explain how breakthroughs in imaging and simulation are used to train doctors, nurses, and first responders in the most advanced techniques in the US. For the first time in history, doctors can visualize their patients’ complex metabolic systems at the molecular level.

Dr. Pamela Boyers is Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Simulation and Assistant Professor, Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Dr. Boyers’ professional interest is to ensure that healthcare professionals (at all levels of training) are highly prepared to provide the safest possible patient care. This interest includes paying close attention to the well-being of healthcare professionals – and how they learn to work efficiently and effectively in healthcare teams.

National Recognition

UNMC’s iEXCEL program rated as exceptional

Becker’s Healthcare recently recognized 93 hospitals and health systems with exceptional simulation and education programs, including UNMC’s iEXCEL program. iEXCEL supports UNMC students and faculty, as well as Nebraska Medicine health care professionals, as they sharpen skills specific to their level of training and disciplines.

Elementary students explore ‘Mini Med School’ at UNMC

Fourth-grade students from Holy Name Elementary School entered the Davis Global Center on a field trip earlier this year, the display rotating human organs, heart, lungs and more in the atrium’s three-story screen prompted a chorus of “ooohs” and “aaahs” from the youngsters.
