About Us

Chairman's Message

Aviva Abosch, MD, PhD

Mission of UNMC Neurosurgery. UNMC Department of Neurosurgery is completely committed to providing the highest quality and most compassionate care for patients with disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, to training the leaders of the next generation of neurosurgeons, and to advancing treatments for neurosurgical diseases through translational and clinical neuroscience research and innovation.

Our Faculty. In addition to being fully trained in all aspects of neurosurgery, our faculty all have subspecialty training in their unique areas of expertise, and have trained at the best institutions in the US. More important than their superb training and technical skills, however, is their unfailing commitment to patient care and their compassion for their patients. Our faculty work within the vibrant, collaborative, multi-specialty environment that is UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, in order to provide the state-of-the-art care appropriate for the treatment of complex neurosurgical disorders. This highest quality of care spans the entire gamut of neurosurgery, with clinical programs offered in surgical neuro-oncology, functional, spinal, pediatric, trauma, and cerebrovascular neurosurgery.

Training at UNMC Neurosurgery. Founded in 1994, the UNMC Department of Neurosurgery offers the only neurosurgery residency training program in Nebraska, and we strive to create the finest possible training environment for the next generation of neurosurgeons. We are extremely proud of our neurosurgery residents, who are known for their tremendous work ethic, and rigorous focus on patient care. We provide a comprehensive, 7-year, training experience that includes access to exciting research opportunities in addition to ample university and community-based clinical volume. Residents are trained in the clinical decision making, technical skills, and professional conduct that are critical for practitioner independence. Nebraska Medicine, the home institution for our training program, is the largest medical center in the state of Nebraska. UNMC Neurosurgery faculty, in conjunction with residents and advanced practice providers, work together to provide a spectacular learning environment for medical students, visiting physicians and scientists, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Discovering New Therapies. We are committed to pushing forward the clinical care that we provide to our existing patients, and for future generations of patients. As such, we are actively engaged in research that includes basic and translational neuroscience, medical device design and implementation, and clinical trials. We are grateful and humbled by the willingness of our patients to engage with us in these research efforts, as together, we strive for cures to nervous system diseases.

As the inaugural Chair of the UNMC Department of Neurosurgery, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the Department of Neurosurgery at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine. Please explore our website, and discover why we excel at patient care, training, and research. We encourage you to contact us with any questions.

Sincerely,
