Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R or physiatry) is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of functional impairments involving the neurological and musculoskeletal systems. PM&R encompasses the treatment of children and adults, and offers several subspecialty areas of concentration – pediatric rehab, spinal cord injury medicine, brain injury medicine, neuromuscular disease, sports medicine, pain medicine and palliative care. Our patients are of all ages, and include conditions such as abnormal muscle tone and weakness/ spasticity; gait problems (difficulty walking); survivors of stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury; neuromuscular diseases producing loss of function; peripheral neuropathy; amputees; arthritis that causes pain or impairment; lumbar (low back) and cervical (neck) pain, degenerative disc problems, and many others.
