Shining a Spotlight on Dr. Nick Guenzel

Bio
What do you do at UNMC?
I teach in the psychiatric nurse practitioner program, conduct research on addiction, and see patients in three outpatient centers.
Tell us about your educational research interests and teaching role.
I am interested in doing research on teaching methods that will help all students succeed. I want to create interactive learning modules where any student who has completed the activities will be able to both do well in the course and will have the knowledge they need to move towards beginning practice. I am also interested in AI patient simulations as a way to give students low-stakes practice using minimal resources no matter where they live.
What is one of your favorite/memorable teaching moments?
I am always encouraged when a student who struggled early in the semester is able to be successful with additional resources and guidance. Seeing them move on to beginning practice is even more rewarding.
What do you see as the biggest benefit to being a member of the IAE?
I think the IAE offers a great opportunity to connect with other staff and faculty members who have a similar dedication to student success.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I have enjoyed taking my kids out sailing and teaching them. It is great seeing them out in the middle of the lake by themselves for the first time.
