Adult Cardiothoracic Fellowship

Our fellowship trains future cardiothoracic anesthesiologists to excel in clinical, educational and research.

Our faculty is committed to providing the highest quality education by offering a wide range of clinical experiences, such as:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafting
  • Valve repair and replacement
  • Aorta surgery
  • Thoracic surgery
  • Heart failure surgery
  • Heart and lung transplants
  • Adult congenital heart procedures
  • Pediatric congenital heart procedures
  • Private practice cardiothoracic elective
  • Hybrid room procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve implantation and percutaneous mitral valve repair

Nebraska Medicine, UNMC's primary clinical partner, is a large tertiary care center and level one trauma center so fellows can expect abundant experience, opportunity and support in the training that takes place there.

Premier Echocardiography Education

Our echocardiography education is second to none. Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellows immediately participate in echocardiography training tailored to their level of expertise and develop their proficiency throughout their fellowship and careers.

In August, fellows are excused from clinical duties for two weeks to participate in Echo Boot Camp, which includes hands-on learning, porcine heart dissection, frequent transthoracic echocardiography scanning, vascular and lung ultrasound, and lectures.

Fellows learn both transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography. Also, fellows easily achieve minimal numbers of exams required for certification in the National Board of Echocardiography’s Basic Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.
