Gate Control Theory of Pain

A chalkboard-style graphic titled “Neural Pathway” displays a vertical list of terms with yellow arrows between them: “Nociceptors,” “Afferent Fibers,” “Spinal Cord,” “Dorsal Horn,” “Substantia Gelatinosa,” and “Brain.” To the right, there is an illustration showing a simplified pathway from a sensory receptor in a red patch of tissue, through the spinal cord’s cross‑section, and up toward a pink brain. A wooden frame surrounds the chalkboard.

This e-module will review the normal basic neural pathway of pain. It will then describe the components of the Gate Control Theory of Pain, and explain how these components may work in the modulation of pain.
