Financial Aid

Budgeting for Study Abroad Trips

Our office helps students apply for financial aid to fund international education experiences. We know it can be hard to plan and budget to go abroad.

Generally, you can apply most forms of federal, state, or institutional aid awarded to study abroad costs. We will work with you to transition into the education abroad program of your choice, as well as adjust your financial aid to meet the educational expenses associated with your education abroad program.

Once you have been accepted into a program, please fill out the Financial Aid Form and submit it to Sara Pirtle, Office of Global Engagement, Williams Science Hall Room 2.0.0116. Upon approval, the Office of Global Engagement will submit the request to the Office of Financial Aid for processing.

Guidelines for Financial Aid Requests

  1. Students need to apply for the funding at least three weeks prior to departure to ensure that the funds will be available in time for the trip. Students may also apply for aid upon return. The average processing time is a week to 10 days.
  2. Students graduating in December who are taking a trip in November or December need to apply no later than Oct. 20.
  3. Students taking trips in May, June, July and August must apply for their loans no later than March 15. Most students have the last date of attendance of April 30, and the loan must be certified before that date. Graduating seniors taking trips during these months should have their loan applications completed by February.
  4. Requests for travel expenses must include a copy of the airfare receipt.
  5. For students enrolled in the same elective and applying for financial aid, requests need to be consistent with one another. An exception is made for the student who elects to apply for less than the entire amount of the elective cost.
