Wildlife officials are investigating a suspected outbreak of bird flu after a large number of dead or dying geese were discovered at parks in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
Dozens of dead geese have been found within the past few days, including near Alcyon Lake.
The discoveries led to the closure of two Pitman parks – Alcyon Park and Betty Park – as county and state officials work together to investigate the cases.
The situation has raised concerns among nearby residents, many of whom live along Lake Avenue, where homes back up to the lake near Betty Park.
Some neighbors reported seeing sick geese in their yards.
“It’s an uncomfortable feeling, for sure. But we’re hoping they’re doing the job they need to be doing to remediate the problem. Otherwise, it’s a little scary,” said Kristin Harris, who lives next to Betty Park.
