Dr. Harris obtained a BSc in Pathobiology, and a PhD from the University of Reading, United Kingdom, where she studied how cell death in the arterial wall contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. She then moved to The Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre at The University of Manchester, United Kingdom, where her postdoctoral research focused on the mechanisms regulating placental growth and function, and how the uterine spiral arteries are remodeled during pregnancy. In 2010, Dr. Harris was awarded a BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship to explore the use of vascular homing peptides to develop a targeted drug delivery system for use in pregnancy. She spent 2011 working as a Visiting Fellow in the laboratory of Professor Erkki Ruoslahti at The Sanford Burnham Institute at The University of California Santa Barbara, then returned to the United Kingdom to open her own laboratory in Manchester in 2012. Over the past 10 years, she has worked with colleagues around the globe to develop the new research discipline of obstetric nanomedicine. In 2015, Dr. Harris was cross-appointed as an Assistant Professor between The Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre and The Division of Pharmacy and Optometry. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018 and held the posts of Research Director for Pharmacy and Optometry, and Scientific Co-Director of the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre from 2019-2022. Dr. Harris relocated to Omaha in 2022, when she was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at UNMC. She has more than 20 years of experience in research supervision and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. She has a track record of securing research funding from a variety of sources and publishing in high-quality journals. She sits on the editorial boards of Placenta and Molecular Medicine Reports, as well as the International Federation of Placenta Associations Awards Committee, and until 2022, the European Placental Council. Through these roles, she works to promote research excellence and support the training and mentoring of the next generation of science professionals.
