Medical Students

Education is a top priority for our faculty.  Along with our residency and fellowship programs, the department participates in several clerkships and rotations, allowing medical students to enhance their knowledge of the musculoskeletal system.

M3 Clerkship (SURG 708 Basic Required Clerkship)

The department offers a rotation through the surgical clerkship rotation.  Students will be introduced to orthopaedic care techniques in inpatient and outpatient settings, examination training, and participate in live lectures.

M4 Clerkship ORTH-722 Orthopaedic Surgery

This four-week rotation allows students to learn how to evaluate musculoskeletal conditions in an inpatient and outpatient setting and become familiar with surgical approaches to treating orthopaedic conditions.  Students will participate in teaching conferences and didactic lectures and give a case-based presentation on an orthopaedic topic of their choosing.

M4 Clerkship ORTH-723 Pediatric Orthopaedic Service

Introduce students to the intricacies and problems associated with children with musculoskeletal problems.  Pediatric orthopaedic is a subspecialty of orthopaedic surgery and is beneficial to students interested in pediatrics or orthopaedics.

M4 Clerkship Orth 762 Off-Campus Orthopaedic Surgery Elective

Students interested in an off-campus rotation must complete the office campus elective application.  Holly White, the clerkship coordinator, must sign the application.

Ortho 799 Orthopaedic Surgery Research

This rotation allows students to work with our orthopaedic faculty and residents on an ongoing research project.  This elective is available only through a special arrangement with an orthopaedic surgery faculty member and our clinical nurse coordinator, Dana Schwarz.  If interested in doing a research elective, please get in touch with Dana at 402-559-4167 or dschwarz@unmc.edu.
