Application Process

Our residency program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please include the following items with your ERAS application:

• Curriculum Vitae
• Personal Statement
• Official Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
• Official Medical School Transcript
• USMLE/COMLEX Scores
• Photograph
• Letters of Recommendation (3)

Deadline

Applications will be accepted through ERAS until December 1st. However, we encourage early submission as applications will not be reviewed once all interview slots are filled.

Position Information

We will have one PGY-1 Categorical position and one PGY-3 Reserve position through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) during the 2027 interview season for a program start date of July 2027.

The PGY-1 Categorical position (NRMP code 1376185C0) is for applicants that are graduating or have graduated from medical school and are beginning their first year of residency. This position is a full 5-year Child Neurology track that includes 2 prerequisite years of residency required to enter the Child Neurology Program. The Child Neurology Track is currently set up to include 2 years of Pediatric residency and 3 years of Child Neurology residency to complete the 5 years required by the ACGME and ABPN.

The PGY-3 Reserve position (NRMP code 1376185R0) is for applicants that have completed their 2 years of prerequisite training (as determined by the ACGME and ABN) and are ready to enter directly into the 3-year Child Neurology Program as a PGY-3.

Virtual Interviews

Candidates applying for the PGY-1 Categorical position should plan a half-day to interview with both the Pediatric Residency Program and the Child Neurology Program. In most cases, you will interview with the Pediatric Residency Program first, including a virtual tour and information about Omaha, our facilities, and House Officer benefits. Then, you will complete the interview day by spending time with the Child Neurology Program, discussing topics specific to our unique program.

Candidates applying for the PGY-3 Reserve position should plan a half-day to interview with the Child Neurology Program. You will get to meet our program director, coordinator, and various faculty members. We try to customize the interview to cater to your specific interests, so please be sure to note any interest in subspecialties on your application. 

Couples Match

Couples Match is an option. We will work in conjunction with the corresponding department to attempt to streamline interview dates and times for both applications.  More information on couples matching can be found on the NRMP website.

Foreign Medical Graduates

Our Child Neurology Residency Program does accept applications from foreign medical graduates through ERAS. We do sponsor a J-1 visa. For more specific information about visa sponsorship, please visit the UNMC Office of Global Engagement website.

Applicants must have graduated from medical school in the past five years. ECFMG certification is required to be ranked. We also require "hands-on" clinical experience in the United States (NOT an observer experience or research alone) with at least two letters of recommendation from faculty in the U.S. who have observed the applicant’s clinical skills. There is no specific requirement for length/number of experiences, just that it is adequate for your U.S. clinical supervisors to be able to speak on your overall readiness to begin residency training in the U.S.  We will require a description of that experience.
