University of Nebraska Medical Center

About Our Program

The general surgery residency program at UNMC offers a balanced clinical exposure across diverse practice settings with extensive skills training programs. Our dedicated faculty have a special interest in providing high-quality surgical education with a wide spectrum of training pathways and research opportunities.

Our residents have autonomy and accountability while being treated with respect. UNMC graduates are board-certified and practice-ready regardless of their chosen specialty and work environment.

The Department of Surgery has a rich surgical heritage. Faculty members and trainees from our department have held leadership roles in American Surgery, including in the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery and various regional and specialty surgical societies.

Tremendous progress has been made in transforming the department to one which is nationally known for its excellence in clinical surgery, education and research. Our general surgery training program has always enjoyed great support from our colleagues in private practice, not only in the Omaha area but in areas throughout Nebraska and surrounding regions. Along with our primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, our other affiliated organizations include the Omaha VA Medical Center, Children's Nebraska, Methodist Hospital and Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska.

The Department of Surgery, and the university as a whole, are committed to providing excellence in patient care, resident training and student education and in fostering the growth of new knowledge through both basic and clinical research.
