Tiffany Tanner, MD 2020It is with pleasure that I welcome you to the website of the General Surgery Residency program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The University of Nebraska Medical Center with its long cherished history is a premier tertiary care academic institution excelling in all three fronts of education, research and clinical activities. The University of Nebraska Medical Center has for well over a century trained surgeons that have excelled and distinguished themselves in all walks of life.

The mission of our General Surgery residency program is to provide the highest quality of education in all aspects which ensures that our graduates receive excellent training, are well rounded, and are prepared to enter this evolving world of Medicine. The principle of our educational efforts is to combine the best methods of the past with the new methods of the future.

We have a well-rounded program in many aspects. Our training is undertaken at a diverse spectrum of practice settings ranging from the tertiary care academic university center, Veteran Affairs center, large and small community hospital setting, rural setting and private practice settings. We have one of the most comprehensive skills training curriculum. This curriculum includes extensive open skills training combined with minimally invasive skills training as well as simulation-based training. Our state-of-the-art simulation center has a Surgical Simulation operating suite. Construction is underway on new facilities that will further expand our capabilities. The residents are also provided with the opportunity to undertake research and scholarly activity in various avenues ranging from basic science, translational, clinical outcomes, education and global health. The recently opened Fred and Pamela Buffett cancer center also provides numerous additional opportunities for research. We are also aware of the changing face of Medicine and have therefore developed avenues for International/Global Health rotations. This wide spectrum of training opportunities provides our graduates with a wide career choice ranging from private practice to obtaining highly competitive Fellowships in academic centers across the nation.

We are located in Omaha which has the amenities of a large city packed into a small town atmosphere. Home to the Husker nation, College World Series, world-renowned Henry Doorly Zoo, host to Olympic Swim & Figure Skating trials and of most recent the US Senior Open Golf Tournament. These activities combined with the lower cost of living and friendly Mid-western values provide an ideal atmosphere for living and raising families.

We are committed in our obligations to maintain a friendly environment that will nurture your talents. We will provide the tools that you need so that you can maximize your efforts to become the best physician, surgeon and person you want to be. I hope you will find our website useful and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
