Shadowing

The Department of Dermatology offers shadowing opportunities for individuals who meet the following criteria: Shadowers in the Department of Dermatology are required to be 16 years old or older and have an interest in the field of dermatology; shadowing is for the primary purpose of career exploration.

  • The Shadower must complete the online application and training required by Nebraska Medicine.
  • After completing the application and training, the applicant must contact the Department of Dermatology representative responsible for scheduling Shadowers, letting that person know their availability to shadow. For security purposes, the department will not honor “drop-ins.”
  • Shadower will complete a brief questionnaire about their level of training to date and their interest in the field of dermatology.
  • Due to the large volume of requests and the need to accommodate other learners, availability for Shadowers may be limited.
  • Shadower may be informed there could be a 2 to 3 month wait before being scheduled.
  • Shadower must comply with all Nebraska Medicine requirements prior to attending their job shadowing experience.
  • The Shadower will be sent information regarding instructions for their shadowing experience. This will include date, time, doctor they will be shadowing, location of shadowing site and other instructions generated from the Nebraska Medicine Job Shadowing Office or the UNMC Department of Dermatology.
  • Shadowers will follow and observe the medical provider for a duration of 2 or 4 hours. There will be no compensation for shadowing nor will the Shadower provide patient care.
  • Shadowers are required to wear an ID badge during their shadowing experience. This badge will be supplied by Nebraska Medicine or the UNMC Department of Dermatology. ID badge will be turned in at the conclusion of Shadowing.
  • In order to provide the best possible environment for patients, Shadower agrees to conduct themselves in a manner befitting a medical professional in a clinic setting. Nebraska Medicine may instruct the Shadower to leave if Shadower's behavior is determined to be outside of the norm of a medical provider.
  • The UNMC Department of Dermatology reserves the right to update this policy at any time.
