In January 2021, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) formally apologized to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color for its support of structural racism in psychiatry. It apologized for silence and inaction during the Reconstruction Era, Jim Crow segregation, and civil rights legislation, and admitted to perpetuating stereotypes and misconceptions of Black patients, that has led to the harmful effects of misdiagnosing or underdiagnosing conditions in Black patients.
