Test predicts which COVID-19 patients will grow worse, Stanford Medicine study find
Stanford Medicine – Elevated virus levels in hospitalized COVID-19 patients’ blood predicts worsening respiratory symptoms and suggests ongoing viral replication in later disease stages, Stanford Medicine-led study says. A one-time test could predict which people hospitalized with COVID-19 are likely to worsen significantly during their stay, even if they were admitted with relatively mild symptoms, […]

Still Short of Breath? Here Are 3 Ways COVID-19 Can Damage Lungs Long Term
Science Alert – As pulmonologists and critical care doctors treating patients with lung disease, we have heard many of our patients recovering from COVID-19 tell us this even months after their initial diagnosis. Though they may have survived the most life-threatening phase of their illness, they have yet to return to their pre-COVID-19 baseline, struggling with activities ranging from strenuous […]

These scientists traced a new coronavirus lineage to one office — through sewage
Nature – Virologist Dave O’Connor admits that he was getting desperate when he started asking dog owners for poo samples. For much of 2022, O’Connor, at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and his colleagues have been tracking a heavily mutated variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Early this year, they discovered the variant in […]

The transcriptional regulator CtrA controls gene expression in Alphaproteobacteria phages: Evidence for a lytic deferment pathway
Frontiers in Microbiology – Pilitropic and flagellotropic phages adsorb to bacterial pili and flagella. These phages have long been used to investigate multiple aspects of bacterial physiology, such as the cell cycle control in the Caulobacterales. Targeting cellular appendages for adsorption effectively constrains the population of infectable hosts, suggesting that phages may have developed strategies […]

Viruses May Be “Watching” You – Lying in Wait Before Multiplying and Killing
SciTechDaily – Viruses may be ‘watching’ you – some microbes lie in wait until their hosts unintentionally give them the signal to start multiplying and kill them. Especially after more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people picture a virus as a nasty spiked ball – essentially a mindless killer that gets into a cell […]

Sewage monitoring indicates a surge of Covid-19 spread in Latvia
Baltic News – September’s monitoring data indicates increased concentration of the virus in sewer water in Riga, Jurmala, Liepaja and Jelgava. Measurements in Liepaja, however, show signs of stabilisation and reduced concentration of the virus. A sharp surge is reported in Ventspils, which contradicts data reported by the Disease Prevention and Control Center.

Lingering cardiac involvement in previously well people after mild COVID-19
Nature Medicine – Lingering cardiac symptoms, including exercise intolerance, tachycardia and chest pain, are increasingly recognized as post-acute COVID-19 sequelae1. In patients with a severe course of initial illness, accrued cardiac injury and pre-existing conditions readily explain cardiac symptoms. However, signs of cardiac injury such as elevated troponin levels and structural heart disease are rare […]

How COVID-19 stole our sense of smell
Chemical Engineering News – SARS-CoV-2 has left thousands with a distorted or lost sense of smell. This population is helping researchers identify what happens when smell goes wrong and what might help. Researchers are getting a clearer idea of how. This understanding and a growing awareness of olfactory disorders could help others facing smell loss […]
