The Specialty Care Center

Our HIV team enhances the lives of patients through its work in research, education and clinical care.

Our mission is to deliver compassionate, evidence-based and patient-centered care to individuals living with or at risk for HIV. We are committed to eliminating barriers to care, advancing health equity, and improving the quality of life for our patients through:

  • Comprehensive clinical care
  • Innovative research
  • Education and training for both current and future health professionals

At the Specialty Care Center, we believe that every person deserves dignified, respectful and expert care—regardless of background, income or diagnosis.

 Meet Our Team

Our dedicated HIV team—including physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, nurses, social workers, and support staff—works together to deliver outstanding patient care, conduct innovative research, and foster education, all with a shared commitment to the health and well-being of people with and at risk for HIV.

The Specialty Care Center (SCC) at Nebraska Medicine was established in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. Susan Swindells as a comprehensive, multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to the care of people living with HIV. Founded during a time when access to coordinated HIV care was limited in the region, the SCC emerged as a lifeline for patients across Nebraska and neighboring states. Over the years, we have expanded our services and team to meet the evolving needs of our patients—integrating primary care, behavioral health, dermatology, psychiatry, gender-affirming care, and more into one coordinated model.

Our clinic has grown to become the largest provider of HIV care in the region, supported in part by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. We are proud to serve a diverse community and to provide affirming, high-quality care in a welcoming environment.
