The Occupational Therapy (OT) department at MMI provides a diverse combination of clinical services and educational activities to support individuals with developmental disabilities and neuromuscular disorders across the lifespan. Occupation is defined as meaningful activity, so our therapeutic focus is on helping clients participate in the activities they want and need to do in their everyday life.
The needs of the individual and their context determine the focus of our evaluation and intervention. We provide education-related OT services to over 1,100 students in schools, through a contract with Omaha Public Schools. Early Developmental Network (EDN) services are provided to infants in their homes or in daycare settings. Other clients are seen during multi-disciplinary clinic visits, with outpatient follow-up to address specific concerns when needed. The OT staff also provides outpatient services at MMI, participates in a number of specialty clinics, and provides consultation to the Nebraska Medical Center neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric transplant service.
Our licensed professional staff includes the only three OT's in Nebraska who are Board Certified Pediatric OT specialists. We offer clinical fieldwork opportunities to OT students from several different universities, and contribute to the pediatric curricula in the UNMC PT Education program. Our staff is committed to evidenced-based practice, and has earned certification in a variety of treatment techniques.
