Dakota News More than 400,000 turkeys in South Dakota flocks have been killed in the last month due to the bird flu, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The bird flu was noted in eight commercial flocks and one backyard flock, resulting in the death of 419,540 turkeys. The flocks were in five East River counties: Beadle, Mcpherson, Jerauld, Spink and Faulk.
The recent surge of bird flu also impacted North Dakota and Minnesota but neither state lost as many turkeys as South Dakota. North Dakota losses were 101,500; Minnesota recorded 25,000.
Across the three-state area, the bird flu was noted in 17 flocks, 11 commercial and six backyard.
