The Department of Neurological Sciences actively participates in education at every level in order to advance knowledge of neurological sciences both within and without the UNMC campus.  On campus, our teaching focuses on comprehensive neurology education for medical students, residents, and fellows.  Off campus, our faculty, residents, and fellows participate in local, regional, national, and international educational activities.  Our educational programs include:

  1. Our faculty teach extensively in the Neurosciences block for first- and second-year medical students at UNMC.  This block includes both traditional lectures and hands-on clinical skills experiential learning sessions led by our faculty, with active participation in teaching by our residents and fellows.
  2. Neurology elective clerkships for third-year and fourth-year medical students at UNMC.  Fourth-year students also have the opportunity to pursue dedicated research electives with department faculty mentorship.
  3. Neurology elective clerkships for fourth-year students at other U.S. medical schools through the Visiting Student Application Service.
  4. A comprehensive categorical (four-year) neurology residency program with 16 residents.
  5. Active subspecialty fellowships in Movement Disorders and Neuroimmunology (Multiple Sclerosis).  Several other fellowships are in development.
  6. Multiple opportunities for college student summer research projects.
  7. Continuing medical education programs to provide community physicians and allied health professionals with information on the latest advances in neurology treatment and research.
  8. Community outreach and education for patients and families struggling with neurological disease.
  9. Observership opportunities for overseas medical students interested in pursuing careers in Neurology.
  10. Visiting scholar opportunities for overseas physicians interested in enhancing neurology knowledge.
