Family Medicine-Obstetrics Fellowship
The UNMC Family Medicine–Obstetrics Fellowship prepares family physicians to provide comprehensive maternity care across inpatient and outpatient settings. This one-year fellowship offers advanced clinical and procedural training, including cesarean delivery and obstetric ultrasound, with a mission to expand safe, high-quality obstetric care in rural and underserved communities impacted by maternity care deserts.
Curriculum Overview
The fellowship provides immersive, hands-on training designed to prepare graduates for full-scope obstetrics within family medicine. Fellows complete the majority of their clinical training on labor and delivery services at Nebraska Medicine and Methodist Women’s Hospital within the Omaha metropolitan area, working alongside board-certified obstetrician–gynecologists.
Fellows also maintain a dedicated obstetrics clinic at the Olson Center for Women’s Health, with the potential for additional clinical experience at Bellevue Medical Center. Elective opportunities at rural sites reinforce skills essential for practice in resource-limited settings.
Training includes extensive exposure to:
- Intrapartum management
- Operative vaginal and cesarean delivery
- Obstetric ultrasound and fetal surveillance
- Acute obstetric decision‑making
- Neonatal resuscitation and stabilization
One fellow is accepted each year; the program begins July 1, 2027.
Teaching, Mentorship & Professional Development
Fellows actively participate in teaching medical students and residents. Structured precepting opportunities strengthen educational skills essential for academic or community leadership roles.
Mentorship includes:
- Quarterly meetings with the fellowship director focusing on clinical progress and procedural milestones
- Quarterly meetings with the chair of family medicine emphasizing professional development and leadership skills
Supervision & Support
Clinical training is supervised by board‑certified obstetrician–gynecologists and family medicine faculty with expertise in maternal care. Academic oversight is shared between the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Family Medicine, supported by a dedicated fellowship coordinator.
