About Us

Empowering our professionals to improve patient prognosis.

Welcome to the Department of Pathology and Microbiology. This website contains features that will introduce you to our many outstanding faculty and staff and their accomplishments. Each link will provide more detailed information on the topics introduced below. You will have the opportunity to learn about our wide range of traditional academic activities and new initiatives that will help define the future of diagnostic medicine, research and education in microbiology, immunology and pathology. The department has a long history of excellence as a member of the College of Medicine and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).

Our department has a strong base of expertise on which we are developing future leaders in research, clinical service and education. We take the same approach with our students as we do with our patients; we treat everyone as if they are members of our family. In many respects, our students become part of our extended scientific family. We are proud of our graduate and post-graduate opportunities that have grown in proportion to the continued development of our basic science and translational research efforts. Our outstanding clinical training programs prepare medical students, residents and fellows for future careers by emphasizing exposure to challenging clinical cases and through personal experience and mentoring by highly talented faculty.

Nationally and internationally recognized research programs have been developed in experimental pathology including cancer biology, as well as microbiology and immunology. In many respects these disciplines are integrated at the scientific level and our department and faculty interactions demonstrate the inherent relationships between pathology, microbiology and immunology.

The diagnostic services offered by our clinical laboratories are changing more rapidly today than at any time in the past. Our commitment is to keep our diagnostic services at the cutting edge of development by incorporating and evaluating new technologies on a daily basis. We are entering the age of personalized medicine where characteristics of an individual’s genome will help in optimizing state of the art therapies and improve clinical outcomes.

Clinical services provided by Regional Pathology Services (RPS) extend throughout the region and around the world. RPS is a collaboration between UNMC and our hospital partner, Nebraska Medicine.

If you are a student looking for outstanding educational opportunities, or a patient or clinician seeking a second opinion or services from us, we encourage you to contact us by either phone or email. Specific contact information is provided in each of the sections of our website.
