Residency Involvement

Resident Research Presentations

The residents actively participate in clinical research by taking part in multiple projects currently underway in the department. In fact, more than half of our residents regularly have posters and oral presentations accepted for presentation at national pathology meetings (USCAP, CAP, ASFA, AABB and others).

In 2024, the department created Research Grant Awards to provide up to $10,000 funding for high-quality research projects leading to publications by departmental clinical trainees for whom other funding sources are not available. The aim of this program is to advance the experience and mentorship in clinical and translational research. All residents and fellows enrolled in our accredited program with support of a faculty mentor are eligible to apply for this award with only one project per applicant per year. Proposals for this award are accepted twice a year – once in the spring and once in the fall.

Resident peer teaching and research awards allow the department to support and recognize residents who take the challenge to excel in these endeavors and enable them to build momentum toward a full academic career.
There are multiple opportunities to be involved in teaching of medical students and other health care trainees through participating and leading small group decisions and one-on-one teaching when trainees rotate through the department of pathology. There are also multiple opportunities for peer-to-peer teaching. For those who are interested in a more formal graduate course in education, our residency program participates in an institutional initiative to develop the next generation of graduate medical educators - Health Educators and Academic Leaders (HEAL). The participation in the program is free of charge for residents.

Health Educators & Academic Leaders

The Health Educators & Academic Leaders curriculum provides a foundation in best teaching practices, educational scholarship and academic leadership to UNMC's health professionals in training. HEAL is the first competency-based interprofessional health educator track in the nation.
