Inflammatory Bowel Disease Fellowship

This fellowship equips participants with the skills necessary to lead in clinical care, research and education in the field of IBD-centered gastroenterology.

The Hawkins Family Inflammatory Bowel Disease Fellowship is a one-year program based at the Paustian IBD Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. This specialized training program integrates hands-on clinical training with cutting-edge research opportunities, fostering the development of a new generation of leaders in the diagnosis, treatment and management of IBD.

Program Details

The Paustian IBD Center is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of inflammatory bowel disease patients by delivering effective cutting-edge IBD health services, creating new knowledge through research that fills critical gaps to guide development of future treatments, and by educating and training health care professionals to serve patients now and in years to come. Medical professionals who practice in this leading center for gastroenterology and IBD care will advance their knowledge and expertise in managing IBD, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis and GI complications of inborn errors of immunity.

Our program objectives include:
  • Provide comprehensive training in the clinical management of IBD.
  • Develop expertise in endoscopic techniques and imaging modalities specific to IBD.
  • Foster skills in designing and conducting clinical and translational research.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration within the healthcare team.
  • Encourage leadership and advocacy for IBD patients and the broader community.

Fellows will participate in:

  • Multidisciplinary IBD clinics, working alongside gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, dietitians, and mental health professionals.
  • IBD-centered diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures
  • Inpatient IBD management, gaining experience in managing complex cases.
  • Case conferences and journal clubs focused on emerging trends and evidence-based practices in IBD management and research.

Fellows will have access to:

  • Ongoing clinical trials and a large IBD database and biobank
  • Laboratory-based studies exploring the pathogenesis of IBD, the role of the gut microbiome, and innovative disease monitoring.
  • Mentorship from leading researchers to design and implement independent projects.
  • Resources for presenting findings at national and international conferences.

Fellows will:

  • Participate in teaching medical students, residents, and junior fellows.
  • Attend local workshops on professional skills such as grant writing, public speaking, and manuscript preparation.
  • Engage in leadership development programs to prepare for roles in academia, industry, or clinical leadership.

Applicants:

  • Must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree.
  • Must have completed a residency in internal medicine and priority will be given to applicant who have completed a fellowship in gastroenterology (and are proficient in endoscopy).
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in IBD through prior clinical or research experiences.

 Applicants should submit the following:

  1. A personal statement outlining their interest in IBD and career goals.
  2. Curriculum vitae.
  3. Three letters of recommendation, including one from their gastroenterology fellowship program director.
  4. A sample of scholarly work, such as a research paper or case report.

Candidates will be selected based on their academic achievements, clinical acumen, research potential, professional recommendations and alignment with the program’s mission and values.
