Research in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology at UNMC is diverse and impactful. Our work is focused on the fundamental biological processes that underlie tumor development and metastasis, host-pathogen interactions, molecular virology, and metabolic adaptations in prokaryotes. In addition, we are developing new therapies for multi-resistant pathogens and parasites that cause malaria and toxoplasmosis. Investigators in our department collaborate with clinical colleagues throughout UNMC and Nebraska Medicine to develop novel therapeutic options and diagnostic tools. Pre- and post-doctoral trainees in our department have secured positions within many disciplines including academia, pharmaceutical industry, government and clinical microbiology. It is clear that novel breakthroughs in biomedical science require collaboration between disparate disciplines. The infrastructure and culture created in our department is designed to facilitate these collaborations and develop new and fresh ideas.
