Areas of Emphasis

Biostatistics

Faculty and students in the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Biostatistics collaborate with scientists, physicians, clinical investigators and other researchers to conduct methodological research. The Department's main areas of research expertise includes clinical trials, study design, survival analysis, generalized linear models, longitudinal analysis, survey methodology, and analysis of microarray gene-expression data and other high-dimensional data.

Environmental, Agricultural and Occupational Health

Faculty and students in the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Environmental, Agricultural and Occupational Health conduct research in the environmental, agricultural and occupational health areas of emphasis. Often their research and service activities are is accomplished through multi-disciplinary collaborations within and outside the College of Public Health, the UNMC campus, and NU system. This broad approach enables us to tackle difficult issues in order to improve the health of our community, especially rural, agriculture-based communities, both in Nebraska and around the world.

Epidemiology

Faculty and students in the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Epidemiology conduct research on a broad range of health outcomes and exposures. The areas we emphasize include occupational and environmental hazards, cancer, infectious diseases, perinatal conditions, injuries, mental health, substance abuse, global health and epidemiologic methods.

Health Promotion

Faculty and students in the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Health Promotion conduct basic and translational research in a broad range of areas, including but not limited to adolescent risk behaviors, tobacco and substance use, nutrition, physical activity and inactivity, obesity prevention and control, environmental sustainability and health, cross-cultural health and health inequities, maternal and child health, school health, sexual health, social marketing, behavioral economics, consumer behavior, clinical and public health ethics and law, and aesthetic and humanistic influences on health. The Department’s research draws upon and integrates diverse methodologies and frameworks, including qualitative and quantitative techniques. In addition, the Department is also at the forefront of integrating systems science frameworks and methods, including the use of computational modeling, with conventional analytical methods to tackle the complexity of modern day public health issues.

Health Services

Faculty and students in the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Health Services Research and Administration conduct research on how health care and public health services are financed, organized, and delivered and how public policies affect the health and well-being of both rural and urban populations. The department’s research improves the fairness of payment systems to both providers and consumers, helps health care providers find more cost-effective means of completing their work, contributes to improvement in care by studying the outcomes of care in the “real world” of practice, and translates research into practice and policy to ensure adequate access to quality health care services for all.

Additional Areas of Emphasis

The UNMC College of Public Health is home for several Centers whose members engage in education, training, outreach and research. Additional areas of emphasis for Center research include but are not limited to:
