Externship program

The UNMC oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program offers one- to four-week externships to qualified dental and medical students. The externship offers the student considering a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in the surgical specialty.

The extern will be expected to participate in the operating room and clinical management of patients as well as the scheduled didactic conferences of the residency program. The extern may be involved in clinical patient care at the Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, Boys Town National Hospital, Creighton University and the Omaha VA Medical Center. Externships are available throughout the year, however the highest demand occurs during the summer months, so plan accordingly.

Lodging arrangements

Lodging arrangements are the responsibility of the extern. In the past, externs have been able to establish arrangements with the help of some of the residents, and should feel free to reach out to residents as needed. Transportation between hospitals and facilities can be coordinated with residents, however, if the resident would like to rent a car or utilize ride-sharing services those options are also available. There are call-rooms available to help make your stay more convenient.

Requirements

Complete the brief application form.

The application should be received at least one month prior to the desired date of externship, however, the sooner the application is received the more likely the desired dates will be available. In some circumstances, externships can be scheduled on short-notice, but this is the exception. Externships are offered to qualified candidates on a first-come, first-served basis.
