The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska offers one to four week externships to qualified dental and medical students. The externship offers the student considering a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in the surgical specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The extern will be expected to participate in the operating room and clinical management of patients as well as the scheduled didactic conferences of the residency program. The extern may be involved in clinical patient care that occurs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Creighton University, and the Veterans Administration Hospital of Omaha. The extern may be asked to present at one of the OMFS conferences during their stay in Omaha, and involvement in research is encouraged. Externships are available throughout the year, however the highest demand occurs during the summer months, so plan accordingly.
Lodging arrangements are the responsibility of the extern. In the past, externs have been able to establish arrangements with the help of some of the residents, and should feel free to reach out to residents as needed. Transportation between hospitals and facilities is typically provided for the extern, however, if the resident would like to rent a car or utilize ride-sharing services those options are also available.
Complete the Application Form.
The application and supporting documentation should be received at least one (1) month prior to the desired date of externship, however, the sooner the application is received the more likely the desired dates will be avialable. Externships are offered to qualified candidates on a first come, first served basis.
