The Department of Pathology and Microbiology offers job shadowing opportunities to first and second year medical students (Phase 1) enrolled at UNMC. Our pre-clinical shadowing program provides students a chance to observe our pathologists in a workplace setting. It allows students exposure to the practice, as well as perspective into pathology as a career. Direct exposure to a specialized medical field is usually the best way to make decisions about future career paths.
Our program is designed to be a one-time observation only experience, lasting two to six hours. The job shadowing experience does not fulfill any clinical or internship requirements; nor does it provide any hands-on experience.
Dr. Dominick DiMaio is our Phase 1 Shadowing program director. If you are interested in job shadowing a pathologist at UNMC, please contact Kevin MacCarthy directly by email or call him at 402-559-7212 to arrange an opportunity. Please provide him with your name, your medical year, contact information, preferred pathology specialty, and available dates. We will make every attempt to pair you with the pathology interest that you may have.
Except in rare circumstances, observerships are only granted to those individuals that have a connection to the institution or department faculty such as students in other UNMC programs. Additionally, approval of observership positions is dependent on academic schedules, limited by department priorities and the number of learners in the department.
